Slasher-Girl...

We have a Calico and she is a lot like this.  She is twelve years old and round as a basketball.  Really, she is a beautiful cat with a silky smooth coat and a pretty face.  The problem is... she's ANTISOCIAL!  She hates people!  She spends the entire day in the basement, unless you go diggin' around in the basement, then she scoots on upstairs until you leave.  I feel badly for her.  At least our basement has windows.

Let me tell you a little about her past.  She was born outside Knoxville, Tennessee.  She was the last remaining kitten of a litter of strays rescued by a lady I met while at a teacher conference.  The lady, a fellow teacher and cat lover, brought her into our session.  She was inside a cardboard box and was smaller than the palm of my hand.  The lady announced she had rescued a litter and found homes for all of them, except the little ball of white multi-colored fluff in the box.  "Any takers?" she asked.  Me, being me, enthusiastically accepted this challenge.

On the way home, a two hour drive, she went from being a tiny ball of adorable fluff who slept in a box to a yowling screeching ball of fluff that had to have the lid of the box closed to keep her inside.

A few days go by and adorable fluff-ball decided to show her true colors.  They are called, "Swipe with claws outstretched and ask questions later."  Thus the name,... Slasher.  I had slashes all over my arms from this 2-pound wonder.  We headed off to the vet for the inititial check-up, and she had to be GASSED in order to get worm meds and to be examined! She was a mini Whirling Dervish with claws!  That girl was tearing some stuff up!  Our vet says, "Ummm, she's a barn cat.  I don't think you have a snowball's chance making a house cat out of this one."  Not one to back down from a challenge, I decided I would rehabilitate her.

Twelve years later, she's basement cat.  Antisocial basement cat.  We have two other cats, both just as old, and very loving to hoomans.  Slasher is at the top of the pecking order between the three, always eating first, getting through the cat flap first (when she isn't getting stuck in cat flap -- which is really interesting), and snuggling with whichever one of those two she wants.  Queen of the Basement.

On the rare occasion, Mr. MS has said that she lets him stroke her under her chin, or behind the ears.  I've never seen it.  It is always when I'm not here.  I think he's making that stuff up.

Moral of this story... If your vet says your cat would make an excellent barn cat and not so much a house cat, consider their advice seriously.  Especially if kitty is a Calico.
